The Lok Sabha has approved a six-month extension of
President’s Rule in Manipur, set to take effect from August 13, 2025. Union
Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the resolution in Parliament, citing
constitutional provisions under Article 356(3).
President’s Rule was first imposed in the state on February
13, 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
His departure came amid internal dissent from BJP MLAs, especially from the
Meitei community.
The official resolution read, “That this House approves the
continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of
Manipur… for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025.”
Despite growing demands from NDA-aligned Meitei and Naga
MLAs to restore an elected government, the state assembly remains under
suspended animation. The current term of the assembly lasts until 2027.
Manipur has been grappling with deep ethnic unrest since May
3, 2023, when violence broke out between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities,
resulting in over 250 deaths and displacing more than 60,000 people.
Addressing Parliament, Amit Shah clarified that no political
party came forward to form a government after the CM’s resignation. He rejected
opposition claims of governance failure, adding that no-confidence motions
weren't feasible due to Congress's insufficient numbers.
Shah highlighted that peace has gradually returned, noting
zero incidents of violence since November 2024. He also stated that over 10,000
youth surrendered arms in the northeast, and two inter-community meetings have
been held so far, with a third scheduled in New Delhi.
In a related operation, security forces arrested eight
militants from various districts on Thursday during intensified area search
efforts.
