More than 12,000 teaching positions remain vacant across Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS) in India, the Ministry of Education confirmed during a Rajya Sabha session on July 23, 2025. Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary stated that a total of 7,765 posts in KVS and 4,323 in NVS are unfilled as of now, affecting schools nationwide.
Chaudhary explained that these vacancies arise due to factors such as the opening of new schools, retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, employees going on deputation, and upgradation of institutions. While the situation is concerning, he assured that the recruitment process is ongoing and aligned with existing rules for KVS and NVS hiring.
To ensure that academic activities continue without disruption, the ministry has allowed the appointment of contractual teachers for temporary durations. This interim measure is aimed at maintaining the quality of education until permanent faculty are recruited.
The teacher shortage issue is not limited to KVS and NVS. Key educational institutions like the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) currently have 143 Group A academic positions vacant, while the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has 60 unfilled posts.
The government has reiterated its commitment to speeding up recruitment to avoid any adverse impact on student learning. The ministry emphasized that efforts are being made at all levels to address staffing gaps and strengthen the country’s public education system.
