Indian Railways Tatkal Ticket Booking 2025: New Rules to
Ensure Fairness and Transparency
Effective July 1, 2025, Indian Railways has rolled
out new guidelines for booking Tatkal train tickets, aiming to simplify
the process for genuine passengers and curb the misuse by touts and agents.
During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament,
several Rajya Sabha MPs raised concerns about Tatkal bookings and the
need for transparency. Responding to them, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
introduced several key reforms.
From now on, Tatkal tickets can only be booked by
Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users via the official website or mobile app.
This move is aimed at preventing fake or duplicate accounts and ensuring
priority to verified users.
In addition, ticketing agents are barred from booking
Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the opening window —
i.e., from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM for AC classes, and 11:00 AM to 11:30
AM for non-AC classes.
The system also requires OTP-based authentication at
the time of booking, whether online or through Passenger Reservation System
(PRS) counters. This OTP is sent to the user’s registered mobile number,
adding an extra layer of security.
The minister also revealed that over 2.5 crore suspicious
IRCTC user IDs have recently been deactivated after advanced data analysis
revealed irregularities.
With nearly 89% of all reserved tickets now booked online,
these measures mark a significant move toward a more secure, equitable, and
transparent booking experience.
Indian Railways has emphasized that feedback-based
improvements will continue, ensuring passengers face fewer hurdles while
booking critical Tatkal tickets.
