Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited
Yellow Line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro on Sunday, August 10, 2025, alongside
flagging off a Vande Bharat train between Bengaluru and Belagavi. The
19.15-kilometre Yellow Line, stretching from R.V. Road to Bommasandra, is set
to ease commuting in the city’s bustling tech corridor and decongest the
infamous Silk Board junction, benefiting thousands of employees in Electronic
City.
Construction of the Yellow Line began in 2017, based on the
2011 Detailed Project Report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation
(DMRC). Initially scheduled for completion in December 2021, the project faced
significant setbacks, including land acquisition issues, COVID-19 disruptions,
and delays in rolling stock supply from Chinese manufacturer CRRC Nanjing.
Despite its promise, initial operations will see trains
running every 25 minutes, a frequency many commuters say will limit the
service’s utility during peak hours. Security was tightened across key areas
including Ragigudda Metro Station and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Circle ahead
of the Prime Minister’s visit.
To minimise road disruption, PM Modi travelled by helicopter
between HAL Airport and the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna City Railway Station,
and later boarded the Metro from R.V. Road to Electronics City. Bengaluru
Traffic Police officials noted that the event’s Sunday schedule would keep
commuter inconvenience minimal.
The inauguration also became a political talking point.
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticised the BJP for claiming credit,
stating that the Metro project was launched under the UPA Government led by Dr
Manmohan Singh, with the Centre initially covering a larger share of the costs.
He alleged that central funding dropped significantly after the BJP came to
power, forcing Karnataka to bear most of the expenses.
With the Yellow Line finally operational, Bengaluru moves a
step closer to expanding its mass rapid transit network, though commuters will
be watching closely for improvements in service frequency in the months ahead.
