TikTok Comeback in India: Is the Ban Being Lifted?
TikTok, the Chinese short-video sharing platform,
which was banned in India in June 2020, seems to be making a comeback.
Recently, several users reported that the official TikTok website has
become accessible after five years, sparking speculations about its possible
return.
TikTok Ban in India: A Quick Recap
The Government of India banned TikTok along with 58 other
Chinese apps in 2020, citing national security and data privacy concerns.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT stated that these apps were involved in
activities that were “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India.” The
ban came amid India-China tensions following the Galwan Valley clash.
The ban was a huge blow for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance,
which lost nearly 200 million Indian users overnight. Despite efforts to
stay operational, TikTok eventually shut down completely on February 28,
2023.
Why Are Comeback Rumours Surfacing Now?
TikTok’s website is accessible for some users after
being inactive for years.
Recent India-China diplomatic talks have improved
relations, with border restrictions easing and trade resuming.
PM Modi is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping
at the upcoming SCO Summit.
China recently lifted export restrictions on key
goods to India.
Is the TikTok App Back on App Stores?
Currently, TikTok is still unavailable on the Google Play
Store and Apple App Store in India. There has been no official statement
from TikTok or ByteDance regarding a relaunch.
What This Could Mean for Indian Users
If TikTok officially returns, it could reignite
competition among short-video platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube
Shorts, and Moj. With geopolitical tensions easing, a comeback seems
possible, but only after government clearance.
