If you use a FASTag on India’s highways,
you’re now facing a new compliance step: the Know Your Vehicle (KYV)
verification. In simple terms, KYV ensures that your FASTag is correctly linked
with your actual vehicle the registration, number plate, tag sticker
and vehicle photo must all match. This is different from KYC (Know Your
Customer), which verified your identity; KYV checks your vehicle details.
Why they
introduced KYV
The main reason behind KYV is to stop misuse
of FASTags. There have been cases where one tag is used across multiple
vehicles, or tags meant for cars are placed on larger vehicles to pay lower
tolls. By verifying vehicle-and-tag together,
authorities aim to make the toll-collection system fairer, more transparent and
less prone to cheating.
What you
must do to complete KYV
Here’s how you complete the process:
to the FASTag issuer’s app or portal (your bank or tag-agency).
- Upload
a clear photo of your vehicle’s front view, showing the number
plate and FASTag sticker.
- Upload
a side-view photo of the vehicle, showing the edges clearly.
- Upload
a photo of the FASTag sticker affixed to the windshield, showing the tag’s
serial number.
- Upload
images of the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) front and back
(digital copy accepted).
Once you submit, the tag-issuer will verify the photos/documents. If approved, your FASTag remains active; if not, your tag may get blocked until you fix the issue.
What if you
don’t complete KYV
You risk having your FASTag status affected.
Several news reports indicate that from October 31, 2025, vehicles without
completed KYV may face de-activation of their tag at toll plazas. If your tag is blocked, you may have to pay
toll in cash and lose the convenience of a drive-through gate.
Why this
may feel like a burden
For many vehicle owners, KYV is yet another
check to clear after KYC. Some are frustrated because:
- The
photo upload specifications (angle, clarity) are strict.
- If you
recently purchased a vehicle and RC is pending, you may face delays or
mismatches.
- Some
tag issuers have reported glitches or slow verification.
“My fastag was blacklisted with balance (…)
since it didn’t have KYV.” These
practical hitches make KYV seem like added paperwork over-and-above what users
expected.
Good things
it may bring
Despite the extra step, KYV also has positive
sides:
- Fewer
fraudulent tags and more accurate toll collection.
- Better
user experience at toll plazas (less chance of you being stopped because
your tag-vehicle link is wrong).
- Helps
maintain the “one vehicle – one FASTag” rule, which keeps the system
simpler for everyone.
Tips to
complete it smoothly
- Make
sure your mobile number linked with FASTag is correct and active you may receive OTPs for verification.
- Keep
your RC (front/back), and clear photos of vehicle & sticker ready
before you start.
- Use
good lighting when taking photos so number plate and sticker serial are
visible.
- If
your RC is yet to arrive, check if digital copy (via DigiLocker or
mParivahan app) is accepted by your bank.
- After
submission, monitor status in the portal/app. If rejected, check the
reason and resubmit quickly.
- If you
sell or transfer your vehicle, remember to update FASTag/vehicle details
so your KYV remains valid.
Final word
The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) requirement adds a
new step in the FASTag system but for vehicle owners who travel highways
often, it’s best to treat it as a one-time clean up rather than an ongoing
headache. Once you complete it correctly, you’ll continue passing toll plazas
smoothly. If you haven’t yet done KYV, it’s wise to act sooner rather than
later to avoid surprises at the toll booth.
